Behind the Closed Doors of School Negotiations

It has not been only the value of the buildings that have caused delay in settlement of the transfer of schools to the ISD.
Not so apparent to the public and negotiators until recently uncovered testimony from the maintenance staff worker who allegedly removed asbestos and lead paint from at least one of the buildings.
The extent of the problem is still under investigation but before the transfer it was a secret of the KCSD. Could this new revelation cause the ISD board to condemn the buildings?
Not knowing which schools are of concern makes me believe it would be some of the older ones, built before say 1965. It is all so new to me, but such information, which has previously been kept a secret, even during the negotiation (disclosure process), is very troubling.
I remember that after I had my heart and mind made up to buy my house, how that kind of unwelcome information made me feel sick just thinking about it. Has anyone else heard these allegations? Some (un-named) elected officials apparently knew of these problems before the transfer and did not reveal the information and for fear of retaliation, I cannot discuss further in this venue what I have heard.

I don't know how U figure it's been a secret????

I don't know how U figure it's been a secret????
I started asking the questions about lead paint and asbestos a year ago…
Then about 6 months ago and 90 days ago when I asK about the Workman’s comp INS for all the week-end make over workers…60 days ago I ask if they had been inspected by OSHA and 30 days ago, I ask abOut Lead paint and asbestos, I ask Lucy Young point blank and she said she would get back to me…
So I don’t see how any one can say they didn’t know???
Are they going to say that about workman’s comp for the week-end make over people when they start getting hurt???
This could mean more $millions to this little school take over FOR Indep tax payers ????
How about them apples????

What U Don't Know, Cannot Hurt U

I do recall that you raised these issues as questions, I just did not realize at the time that there was already substantiated facts and/or testimony about those hazards. These are absolutely issues of public concern and for our public officials to refuse to openly discuss them is a violation of public law and the public trust we place in them.
It is not as if we blame them for the hazards being there, but only because they would allow the public to remain ignorant about the danger.
It is as if public officials believe that knowlege of a problem is worse than ignorance. That idea is contrary to the philosophy that understanding a problem takes you closer to the solution.

Asbestos & Lead paint cost $Millions…

Asbestos & Lead paint cost $Millions…
U don’t have to be genius to know you CAN’T send a bunch of house wives with a bucket of paint, to paint over lead paint….
It has to be removed, as does Asbestos…
These 1950 buildings are full of both…
These ISD leaders, ignoring or disregarding facts could cost Taxpayers millions…
These leaders have to quit costing $ with poor judgment & litigation…
OSHA inspections & EPA clean up is the law…
I guess it’s NOT the law in Indep…
When someone gets hurt on July 26 &27th.
Or when kids start getting sick ?
When the people that work those days start filling law suits ?
The dist will be screwed again,
U CAN’T SAY U HAVEN’T BEEN WARNED…

$1 Leases and A Penny for Your Thoughts

For now the agreement to lease the buildings for $1, would place the liability on the landowner, KCSD. Although, I suppose liability would probably dictate that knowledge of a hazardous condition might create litigation for both parties.
I would say let the lawyers fight it out except that we already payout millions every year to them. That's should be criminal in and of itself, but when those same lawyers launder the money and pay for the campaigns funds for these incompetent stooges, then we can see the real scope of the problem.

It’s just the leaders attitude

It’s just the leaders attitude
What ever we can get away with is OK?
What the voters don’t know it’s OK…
Here we are talking federal Law, and it will come back to bight them…
You can’t paint over lead paint and Asbestos, and if it was there 20 years ago it’s there now
KCSD never spent any $ to clean it out or up??
So where did it go???
These people are supposed to be smart??? They are educators??? What kind of lessons are they teaching here???
Come on Jim give us a straight answer…. You think U look bad now.
It’s going to come out and then how will you look????

Hearing this really bothers

Hearing this really bothers me. My son, a student from Van Horn, came home last year telling me that one of his teachers asked the students of the class to have their parents complain and so on about asbestos, but he did not want his name brought into it. This was after the vote, while I tried to find out anything I could, this is not easy information to get, let alone anyone to talk to you about it. I have no proof or anything other than what I was told from my son.

Oh, Bother

KCSD claimed they had a right, per Missouri Sunshine Law, to close meeting discussions because information might be discussed that would affect the sale (price) of public property. While I don't recall that anyone (other than myself) called attention to the ridiculous aspect of disclosures which are required by other State Laws pertaining to real estate and sale of property that could be protected or otherwise overruled under the SSL. It is only now apparent that this is the issue that might have been the matter raised in those closed discussions.
It's time that citizens shake up some legal help to address this accountability and liability issue.
A class action suit should be filed to protect our children from these shenanigans.
