The once proud and full of life Examiner on-line archives have been down since May 6, and with more than three months of zero movement on that front, I am now assuming that they are dead.
RIP Archives, we loved you and now you're apparently gone forever. At least they left you a tombstone at the top of the web site that says, "Archive."
Considering we've had little news of why you're dead, it leaves us no choice but to speculate wildly about what is the problem here. Based on the timing of your death, I'm guessing that you were killed for some reason associated with Gatehouse Media Inc.'s acquisition of The Examiner.
A quick search at Google Finance for the ticker "GHS," shows that others are speculating openly here as well... Under the "Discussions" section, there is a topic called "Gatehouse's Internet Problem." The author basically insinuates that Howard Owens, the top IT guy at Gatehouse, is a moron. It's an interesting discussion, especially since the people defending him in later comments don't address IT issues at newspapers owned by Gatehouse, but instead spend time defending a stock that lost more than $14 of its value in the past year.
Based on what I've seen with the inability to resurrect The Examiner's archives, I tend to side with the author that blames Howard Owens for these issues.
Look, I'm a subscriber to The Examiner, so for me this issue is only about wanting the services they provide for my money to work, that's all. I'll admit here right now that I don't read The Examiner as often as I used to anymore, because if I happen to miss a story that ends up getting further coverage on a different day, I have no way to easily get caught up. The on-line archives previously helped with that. They also served as a way to remind yourself about issues that were quiet for awhile, but now back in the news.
My point here is that if the old achival information is dead and gone, fine, we've now had a niice little memorial service for it. But there must be some way for The Examiner to at least start archiving stories on a moving forward basis. If Howard Owens isn't a moron, then he should easily be able to find a way to at least get that much done.

Archives back online

The Examiner
I agree....
I can't say I do a lot on the archiving issue unless I have to research for something in particular. I will say this has been a beautiful memorial service for a system that was shut down awhile back that apparently won't come back.
The way I see it, is yes it is a shame that morons can't manage to get their crapola up and movin' for some stupid reason or another, but my daddy had a saying and I think it is fitting for this situation. "Either poop or get off the pot," (not his exact wording, but it is clean) if you can't figure out how to get the old archives back then wow go back to IT school and get ahold of a professor that knows what he is doing. Now, I'm not saying that the Examiner is the problem or anyone involved at the Examiner, but apparently whom ever is behind the IT for the company that bought out the Examiner is an idiot to not be able to figure out this issue.
I'm sorry if I'm stepping on toes or ticking people off, but this is me so get over it. Love ya all, but the truth hurts sometimes and if you disagree then you have been lying to yourself all these years.
By the way MMinnoe, how is your friends situation that I have the paper on? I have been meaning to call, but with daddy having his ups and down this week I don't get very much time.

Time Capsule
I thought for sure the archives were in a time capsule buried under General Jaskson's horse.
I have lost a few hard drives through the years of computer use, so it a relief to know that some of what has been inaccessible since May may soon be revived.
Thanks Examiner Staff for generating a whole lot of stories from scratch.
Archives
We are getting really, really close to having the archives back up. There is a third-party vendor that has been pulling all of the stories that were published prior to our new site launch on May 6. They have to strip the story information for each story and pull that into a database that will allow you to easily pull the information from.
Looks like we should have them back up by the end of the month. We're all crossing our fingers here and hope they don't run into any issues with this! ;-)
As for the stories that have been posted on May 6 up to today, those are online. You can do a search for them in the upper right hand corner of our site.
Thanks,

Thank You!
Thanks, I really do appreciate the update and your attention to this issue.
Well there seems to have been a shake up...
I ask the new guy if Criss was gone and he said he was so I would guess there was some prob with the switch over... it didn't go very smooth on my end ... I still have one computer that will not log in period, even though Criss assured me it was my prob not the Blog ...???
The new guy seems insterested so lets give him a chance and maybe he will make it work????
He's only been on the job a week???
man we are tough...
Re: New Guy
From the New Guy's perspective:
I appreciate the fact that you want to give me a chance, I really do. This is one of the first issues that I asked about when I arrived. I will inform you that we have a more than capable staff working very hard with both Gatehouse and our third party to ensure that these archives come back sooner rather than later.
Since I have been here, this has been a daily conversation with a lot of frustrated people on all ends. However, as Mrs. Novinger stated, it does appear to finally be coming to fruition and I do have to commend the people that are working so hard on it for everything they are doing. Mrs. Novinger stated earlier that the company we are working with is having to "strip the story information for each story and pull that into a database" which is very time consuming and frustrating. It's the equivalent of reading the stories in Chinese and having to tell your English speaking friend what it says so that he can relay it to all of you.
I will assure you that Mrs. Novinger, the team of people at Gatehouse, and the team working independently are working diligently to get this information back to you as quickly, and more importantly, as correctly, as possible.

Blame game
I'm honestly willing to give the local Independence guys the benefit of the doubt here. That's why I spent so much time talking about the apparent ineptitude of the corporate IT guys at Gatehouse Media, the company that currently owns of The Examiner.
That said, I would think there has to be something the local guys can do on this front. Like at least achiving stories from here forward. I'm really not interested in excuses. I'm a paying customer of The Examiner who just wants the archives to work, or at the very least to hear what they are doing about it. There hasn't been one word on this in three months.
It was in the early 60’s about 63 or 64
It was in the early 60’s about 63 or 64 that I found out that in Russia they rewrote the history
books to suit themselves… The rudeness of these people to think they could rewrite history…
U don’t like the history just give it a little once over…
I was so up set as a kid about 12, I couldn’t see straight…
My dad told me to calm down …
I never did…
There were 400 kids in the class of 66 @ Truman High School and only 4 of us went to Vietnam as a first choice…
These people the Chinese Communist were doing something wrong & I need to go make it right…
2 died 2 came home…
Now they are holdin the friggin Oly’s
How do U think I feel??????
So when my local hometown newspaper acts like communists,
how do U think I feel???
I’m really sorry for U young people,
I had the best of it here in Indep, Polly's pop, Tuman as a new school, 55's chev's for $50 bucks.…
The 60’s the 70” we used to care about stuff, …
We were cool and we would go to war about it….
This newspaper is lost…
we the young people...
Well some of us young people are finally starting to wake up and see how messed up our cities and our country is becoming. Everywhere I go and when the opportunity presents itself I am always talking to people telling them how our government and corporate controlled media "creates" the news rather than only reporting it. Censorship on the internet is right around the corner here in the US. They've already been talking about changing the whole setup of the internet over in Europe and in Canada making it how it would be over in communist china which is TOTAL censorship. We, the US really need to consider staying out of other countries business. Our Founding Fathers warned us against all of the stuff that we have been doing and grown accustomed to. They knew what it would lead to and that is TYRANNY! So by all means mminnoe, please dont feel sorry for me! Maybe all of the other people that are too deceived and brainwashed by a system thats beyond corrupt.

i"m gonna respond..
I just have to come to grips with what I can say...
do U think Oly Mens volley ball is gay???
organized sports...
Yeah I'm not really into any sort of "organized sports" at all. I'd rather fly solo and do my own thing, hence is why I got into aggressive inlining way back when I was 14 and have been going strong for eleven years now and counting. As for mens volleyball, it is rather difficult to find anything at all that is heterosexual with that!...
