Well I was voting for prop A …

Now I’m not …
Read the David Lieb article in the ex…
Gambling is dumb, It’s dumb all the way around ..
It’s just a way to steal money for the people who can least afford it…Poor People, people on welfare and public assistance, mom’s livin on food stamps and SSI, Hud housing, people spending unemployment checks…
BUT NOW INDEPENDENCE SCHOOL DISTRIC GETS NO, NO MONEY FROM THE PROP A INCRESE???//
It goes to Blue Springs of course & Lee Summit????
All the Eastland money goes to BS, Bas pro the events center???
We pay to build this Crap and BS get the School money from it????
How bad a deal have we made here???
Vote NO on A….

Actually....

Independence would see money from Prop A. What you're talking about is Independence doesn't receive any money from the Bass Pro or any of those businesses down there because they are in the Blue Springs School District. However, Independence does see money in the form of sales taxes.

However, I'm with you on I'm not voting for it. But not for the reasons you're against it. I know lots of people who gamble at the boats and can afford it. I don't really know of anybody who can't afford it, but then again, I personally have only been at the boats maybe 3 or 4 times and spent maybe 40 bucks.

I'm against it because it limits the competition of other casinos. They would cap the limit at 13 so there would never be another casino built unless one goes out of business. I believe in survival of the fittest when it comes to companies and if you aren't good enough to attract customers, then you should go under.

Well according to the Article in the EX…

This is some sort of special deal and Indep will NOT GET A DIME….
Blue Springs & Lee Summit will…
If U think that is in correct take it up with the EX they printed a full page on it????
I live in the Handicapped, low income Fixed income community, of welfare and HUD housing...
and trust me its a shame the people that spend there food budget at the boats, which are not....
Then come and borrow $ from me to eat on....
remember the "BOATS" are not built on the backs of winners...

I just read...

I just read an article on Prop A and it did say that some school districts wouldn't receive money in the first year because of the way the Missouri school financing formula works. And Independence was one of them that wouldn't receive any money the first year, but both Blue Springs and Lee's Summit would and here's the breakdown:

District Estimated increase
Liberty $0
North KC $1,517,167
Blue Springs $1,149,177
Lee’s Summit $1,373,595
Hickman Mills $0
Raytown $796,039
Grandview $0
Independence $0
Kansas City $0
State total $54,878,527

So if this is what you were talking about, then I apologize. However, that was for the first year and after that ISD would be receiving money, but the article didn't mention how much.

I'm still not voting for it though and I think that they should be giving that money to the school districts as was originally planned when the boats first came to the state.

I just got my Wed paper so I’m a little late..

So U don't believe me ...
how about State Rep: Ray Salva?
His article on the op page spells it out for U…
the schools that get money form A...
get 1% of rev collected…ONE, 1% ONE, THAT’S ONE…
So next time U want to correct me on something…
Do a little research…OK ? OK

I think you're mistaken on Prop A and maybe the new Arena

Prop A is about the riverboats. They will put the money for schools into a separate account and then it will be distributed with all the school districts in Missouri.

The new arena is being built in the Blue Springs school district and some of the shopping that they plan on building over there will be in the Lee's Summit School district. Those companies and the arena will have property tax on them that will go to those school districts and then the sales tax will go to the city of Independence.

So the Independence school district will get money from Prop A, but they won't from the arena. However, after reading more about Prop A, I still won't be voting for it. I think it's a deal for the existing casinos to do what they want without fear of competition and they will be taking in more because they won't have loss limits. And from what I've read, they won't be paying that much more into the education fund.

Good Schools = money…

BS and LS are couple of the best schools in the state, they reflect it at ever level, sports, academics, David Cook…
They get the most $, but Indep tax payers are payin the bill…
Gayle said it best, where are the programs for special needs kids we need , when is BS going to pay its own bills…
VOTE NO ON “A”
Never feel sorry for Casino’s what they skim is more then the schools get ….

Yes....

It is being built in Blue Springs and Lees Summit district, but Independence citizens get to pay the dang taxes.
As for Prop A I know nothing sorry.

I agree

I also am voting no. I feel like it was a big casino that managed to get all three of these lumped together, so they would not get anymore competition from another boat on this side of the river. I also wonder why, when the boats first came in, that this was not set up at that time regarding the special account for schools only.

Just wondering who has who in their back pocket?

Last I heard....

We can vote in any casino, but everything is ultimately left up to the Missouri Gaming Commission.... I know someone that works for the Gaming Commission and works on the games and stuff and we had that discussion 7 years ago and that is what his boss and him told me. The original agreement was for the money to go to the schools, but when they did ship it over the Cities would take it for other things. That is all I know and like I said that was 7+ years ago, everything has probably changed since then a lot.
