I just got off the phone with Col Mustard, and he assured me he was at a meeting with the FOP group and they have voted to support the New 3/8-cent tax for more Poooliccceee and PooooLicceee, stuff?
It will be announced in the next days paper .
So that should shoot down the argument that the Cops are AGAINST IT?
Don’t believe me call City Hall…….

Say, mminnoe, I know this is an old issue....but Jason White says in his EX article today that he had heard that the FOP voted 60% AGAINST supporting the sales tax issue / vote !
Scratched my head when I heard that, because I recalled this thread. Is Jason wrong?
.....well my name isn't mminoe but I think the "telling thing" here is that "HE HEARD"........which basically means NOTHING..............it could have been said by "Light My Fire"........and I hEARD that.......ROFL........."he said , she said"..........it makes no sense unless they explain some "underlying info that WE'RE not privy too....and since nobody's talking?.........I'm gonna go with "common sense"...................
Well, you'd think this would be a matter of public record somewhere.
.........can't you just leave those pesky facts and truth out of this mminoe?.........it sounded so impressive the way Elisa implied how much the FOP and the mayor respected the "NO VOTERs"........inferences......implications.......delusions..........I've heard ENDLESS whining about the current proposed plan to pay for increased police services......could somebody please give me a link or point me in the right direction....so I can read the plan which the 'NO VOTERs" have .........how to pay for increased police services.......the FOP already said they don't have the resources.without the increase.......I would like to compare the plan of the naysayers........there iS a plan isn't there?...............we know they're short on cars.....personell.......and that we need a "shiny new police building for the rich in the Emerald City"...........ROFL..........has a psychotic ring to it doesn't it?.............what?......we want to be a poor" run down" old city?..........I don't see many McMansion neighborhoods in Independence.........these naysayers should get out more......to places like Atlanta.......Chicago......Philadelphia.......Overland Park.........ROFL........Hallbrook.......gimme a break........I'm glad these naysayers AREN'T running the city........it would be an embarrassing place to live..............."Emerald City?"............ ha ha ha ha ha.........you're talkin bout 39th STREET?................ ha ha ha
Speaking of pesky facts, who came up with it's going to cost an average of $20 a year. I figured up my families income and granted, that's assuming we spend 100% of our money in Independence (which we don't), but it wasn't anywhere close to $20.
So what income is the 20 dollars a year based on.

Well Dag early on in this discussion, E anointed DRaash as the resident expert in fact is this matter and thanked him a dozen times for explaining it to the rest of us so well?
I accept it, I think DRaash is a smart guy. Well last Sat he & I were tossing it around and he aks Me if I wanted to spend $20 bucks a year to hire 60 new Pooolicceee type people & build a new jail etc….?
I said YES I would in a heart beat, that its one of the most cost effective things I’ve heard of in a long time?
So the $20 each, a year figure comes from the VOTE NO side of the discussion.
Civil actually says it will be closer to $32 ea which I think is still fair?????
dwood87 I do spend 100% of my money in Independence. I have been told from some that if we pass this extra tax they will not shop in Independence. Doors are closing and the city of Independence just wants more and more!!! You hear how big companies are having their employees donate work for free to keep their doors open. You see how cities are tightening up all they can but our city just don't get it! Thanks for your blogs I always enjoy reading them because they give me great hope. xox
Obviously dwood, it will vary from family to family. How much discretionary funds do you have after paying for rent, utilities, etc. Money you can spend on clothing, eating out, etc., things you can control whether you purchase or not. $5000 per year? That's $5Kx .00375 = 18.75/year. $8Kx.00375? that''s $30.00 per year. The $20 per year would be based on a discretionary fund of $5,333 per year,, $444.00 per month, $102.00 per week,$14.65 per day. Granted, that's not a millionaires solution, but I bet it will fit most of us.
My wife and I aren't rich, I would consider us to be maybe just a little better off than average, but using ballpark figures on us our taxes would come out to around 200 bucks a year.
That's after house payment, car payment, insurance on both, medical, income taxes, FICA, utilities, and everything else I can think of that we purchase and don't pay sales taxe on.
I also found this http://www.thinkkc.com/SiteLocation/TaxesIncentives/SalesUseTax.php
So if this passes, we'll have a pretty healthy sales tax that's higher than Overland Park, Lees Summit, and Blue Springs, all cities that seem to have a better quality of life standard than Independence does.
These guys just don't get it. xox
If that's just the increase you are darn well off. If its the total, maybe that;s not so bad.
I can tell you that we're not on fixed incomes and we are fairly comfortable. I don't have a new car, my newest car is 5 years old. I have a TV that I bought from someplace that gets TV's from schools that are upgrading.
I still haven't decided on how I'm going to vote, 200 some odd bucks a year isn't much for more police for us, but that's on top of all the other taxes that we pay. When do we stop getting taxes raised? We're already paying about 12-14k a year in just income tax which will probably go up with all the money the feds are spending. My wife pays an income tax because she works in Kansas City. I just bought something down on 39th street today and because of all this talk, I checked out the tax rate and it was 8.226 I believe.
On the other hand, I know we're gearing up to really needing a bigger police presence in Independence. One of my kids tells me about all sorts of gang stuff going on regardless of what the examiner says in the article. I've read several articles about the increase in crime in Independence in the last 8 years or so. I remember never ever hearing about a murder in Independence and there have been 2 in the last 6 months within 4 blocks of my house.
It's almost like a big catch-22.
Hey dwood! That is the biggest issue here and you finally said it with reasoning, it is all a catch-22 for everyone..... I have heard our sales tax will go between 8% to over 10% in some areas...... We do have the highest sales tax around and that is why I suggested getting rid of the cops that don't want to do their job and get some that will do their jobs, but that suggestion hasn't flown with anyone!
Wooo up a little on Ur math?
If the current tax rate at Bass Pro/Mall area is 8.23%? as stated here, and U raise it by 3/8of a cent???
IT AIN'T GOIN TO 10%???????????
That is the sort of BS that has taken over this discussion, and its just BS NOT FACTS???????
May make it more FUN, but its not true?????
According to what I was told by someone in the city is that in certain areas our sales tax would raise up to 10% and I didn't give any figure of what sales tax was at 39th street..... Did you miss that email MMinnoe, lol?
No but the post U were responding too from Dag, he said He was in the area of Emerald City and he was charged 8.26 % sales tax on SAt?
and no where in the city is any one NOW or in the NEAR future going to be charged 10% sales TAX ?
It is BS and I don't care who told U that and by repeating it U make Ur self look .......
like Ur trying 150%?
Oh, I thought you were saying I said it, I was lost man! I seriously doubt we will have a 10% sales tax, but that is what he said could happen!
......no chair throwin from "club members"...............ROFL...................JSP?.................I'm startin to like the club name............
I also lov people who give 150 %???
as an old math teacher, it makes my teeth hurt....
........I get you......I put siding up for about 5 years........and I'm a little OCD........if I see a picture that's not exactly level?.....I have to straighten it.......rugs have to be "squared"..........things on my desk need to be "centered" ........I see things that aren't straight.......so I understand where you're coming from......but I'm kinda gettin used to the "math " on here......2 + 2 = 5............ ha ha ha
I'm all for getting rid of incompetent or lazy cops, however, I don't know any cops let alone whether they are competent or not.
Is this tax the only thing that will allow us to expand our police force and if that's the case why has the city allowed that to happen? I'm wondering if they couldn't cut back on something else and try to increase the tax base by making Independence a safer place to be encouraging people to move back instead of trying to get the ones who already live here to pay more.
Dwood, I just figured that would be a great place to start that was all! I do know of a few cops that could be let go for not doing their jobs, but there are others that do a great job and could stay........... They could stop giving some of the City officials raises all the time to just keep them, but other than that I think the tax is pretty much it, but I don't know that for sure!
Civil, how about a big screenTV and a new car, would that change that fiqure?
It all depends on your discretionary funds and how you choose to spend them. The easy solution for you and others who oppose the tax is to just vote no. That will solve all your questions.
Who is Col. Mustard again? Is it the Mayor or the City Manager? If there was a meeting, I would love to know when and where, if you know. That's not the info I have heard from the law enforcement individuals I have talked to. Did this Col. tell you if the funds generated by the tax will go into the General Fund for the City? The police didn't get what they were promised with the last tax, according to my source, that's why they would not be in "full" support. Have you talked to the F.O.P.? I would like to hear it from them.
Why don't you bring your source forward. He/he should be interesting. Have you ever read 82.875 rsmo? Had you, most of your questions would have been answered. The police got exactly what they were promised in 2004. All the law allowed. If you can read, Mminnoe just told you that the F.O.P. support for the tax will be published in the EXAMINER Saturday.
Straight from the Mayors mouth to me on Friday, via phone........
She is slow we have to humor her.......
Yes, so sorry that you have to suffer my illiterate inane ramblings. From the Mayor's mouth did you say? Well, that's good as taking it to the bank. Politicians always speak the truth.
In your first post, mminnoe, was that THIS "next days" paper?
Has the police endorsement come out in the paper?
I didn't see it Sat but it could have been there, but that is what Don told me... it will be in the paper?
