Big Fight in Indep yesterday, CAR vs. TRAIN…
The Train won, the train always wins.
In the paper yesterday there was a big story about Levasy crossings being closed.
After over 100 years of being in use, they are declared dangerous and are being closed??
I get so tired of hearing how the big bad train hit the car????
Trains are where trains are supposed to be.
When they hit a ca,r its because the car came On to the train track????
If people are so dumb they will go around crossing lights and arms to get on the track????
It’s just nuts to me how a car that can go 70 mph, gets hit by a train doing 15mph.?
But instead of working on dumb kids racing trains, or people probably too old to drive we close the dangerous crossings????

MMinnoe, this statement has bothered me,since I 1st read it.I was driving my Geo Storm to a park off Little Blue Road,June of 2002.There was a train-track-crossing sign in place,I saw that. What I didn't expect, was a drop-off right to the right, which I unwittingly drove onto.My car got stuck. There was a bunch of people there for a Family Re-Union,3 men came to try help my boyfriend, move the car away.I didn't want my 11 year old son trying to help,we had already gotten away from the car & tracks.Anyway, the train totalled the car,it was a Union Pacific train, they denied responsibilty, said it was the City of Independence's "property" City said UP.lawyers wouldn't help, cause no-one was injured! Just please get the facts, before you judge....

Glad no one was hurt.....
But WHO was drivin the car???????
who drove it onto the tracks????????
who didn't see the drop off, that probably 20,000 other people have scean?????????
Sorry truth Hurts sometimes........

What if the train crossing arms and or lights don't work properly does still make the person dumb or stupid?

.......years ago my grandparents were driving home from K.C. to Warsaw.......in their green Dodge Dart..... they were on a backroad because they were afraid of highways......they didn't drive much .......grandma not at all......ever...grandpa from Fristoe to Warsaw usually.........it was pouring down rain.......according to the police report  there was NO warning sign of an impending railroad crossing.......either missing or covered up by brush.....I don't recall.......they were clipped by the train and dragged 100 feet or so.......remarkably they we'rent seriously injured although the car was totaled.......Granny took nerve medicine the rest of her life.....we may never know the exact nature of damage...but they lived..........the railroad settled with Grandpa...an Ozark dairy farmer.........for $10,000 before any of the family could find out about it.......this was in the 70's I think........so I don't know exactly what should or shouldn't be done with the crossing issue.....I would agree that MOST of the time?........it's impatience and stupidity that rules at the crossing.......the train  IS where it's supposed to be.......

Yes! They have eyes and they have ears. Never assume a mechanical device is going to work 100% of the time. I guess you know what to assume causes?

I just think were getting to a society where we are NOT responsible
ANYTHING we do? NO matter what we do, it’s NOT our fault?
We teach that to our kids, and we expect it as adults?
I still have a Class A commercial Drivers License in my wallet?
I don’t drive any more but I keep it current???? Why ????
But I do believe that after an age, say 65 or 70 people should have to
demonstrate an ability to drive and be safe behind the wheel?
A sheriff at the DMV could tell by talking with a person after a few minutes
If the needed a drivers test?
This is for all those bikers out there; old people don’t see them or TRAINS.

I've seen it. You probably have also. Grown people trying to beat the train at the crossing simply because they don't want to sit and idle for a few minutes while the train goes by. So, in keeping with the philosophy of the modern world, we change  things to protect people from their own stupidity. If the crossing isn't a "blind"  situation, why not leave it open?
