This is something I posted about a month ago. I just wonder if the paper newspapers realize what is happening. We all get our news in other ways now. (I realize you have to be guarded in what you might say).
This is the problem I’m facing with EX NOW…
With the times, and the cost of gas, and the will of young people, I can’t get a new paper delivered…
sense I can’t get out and comb through my bushes,
I have a hang on mail box condition on my paper..
For eight years, I had great people that became friends, that would say hi and either hand me or toss the paper into the front door…
I used to bake cookies and past out tips and was very appreciative of the service…
now for the last six months or so, the EX can’t get any consistent delivery people…
Hey with gas $4 a gal and the subscription price just $10 a month how could they make a living???
So for the last couple of months I don’t get a paper daily…
So last week I said, mail it to me, I get mail.
The EX argued, Dale said he would get on I, and I got a paper for about three days then it stopped again…
Funny part I paid them more $2.50 to have it mailed U get it a day late, but U get it …
The Ex doesn’t want to do that????
Our local paper U don’t count on for NEWS, but its nice for local information….
That’s all its about keeping up with local info…
And for me it’s a lot of fun, maybe that’s why they quit bring it to me????
Could be…
But they are Dinosaurs…. And the guys like me that like to read them are too….
Delivery of the news is only part of the equation. Gathering the news is also affected by the rising price of energy. Cut staff and doubling the number of assignments has decreased the amount of time the reporter can invest in the story.
News events do not always wait for the press to arrive. That gives our government the ability to get their story to the media because they like to time the events. Similarly, they can block access by conducting two events at the same time, thus forcing the newspapers to make a choice of which is most appealing topic to the public. I have heard this complaint many times from reporters in the field.
There is a movement by all media, especially on line, to allow reader participation. This provides the balance not only to cover the story but also to gauge reader interests. I hope they are paying attention. Bloggers have a very important role in the direction and content. I would like it if the Examiner would track the number of hits (readers). I suspect the numbers will be disappointing but important nonetheless.
YouTube, MySpace and public news commentary are essential aspects of the future of journalism. Being on the cutting- edge, we have a great deal of responsibility to do it right. If the status quo takes the lead, propaganda is all we will see in the future news. Puff pieces written by elected officials are a diversion and fabrication of reality. Those stories are intended to lull the public into believing your government is altruistic and benevolent.
