Van Horn cost plenty how many millions and has 210,7107 square feet!  The capacity is 1,200 students, why not change boundaries?  It make too much sense, I guess??  The reporters just gets a note from the superindent and print!  Let us at least think, the people of Western Independence are not all yahoos!

The bloggers need to be informed before saying things they know absolutely nothing about. Since April 24, 2004 I have been involved with everything having to do with western Independence and Sugar Creek schools. NO boundaries are to be changed in western Independence and Sugar Creek per the vote of November 2007. Only the new elementary school in western Independence would change boundaries in that area. I have been to the meetings with Superintendent Hinson. We need a fourth high school in eastern Independence and a elementary school in western Independence. I've lived in western Independence for over 40 years and don't want to live anywhere else. I'm at Van Horn High School at least once a month and I'm very pleased at the difference since leaving KCMOSD. If you want to get informed call the Independence School District Office and ask questions. Education is where we need to put our tax dollars to work and then hopefully we will need less money for law enforcement, prisons, etc. Kids Are Our Future!

Why  do you feel we need a fourth high school?

Both William Chrisman and Truman are over capacity. By the time the fourth high school is built (which will be two to three years) they will be busting at the seams. We also need a new elementary school for the western Independence side. We have to have forward thinking. My husband owns a company that isn't located in Independence at this time. We hope with what if being done in Independence he can move his company to Independence, which will bring employment to Independence, which will bring families and we will need the shools.

jsmith, These folks long for the way thing were and are about as excited about a 30 bond as a 30 year mortgage. You're fighting an uphill battle. Frankly, I don't know why Jackson County doesn't designate an area of the county a school tax free residential zone with no public school district for the area, much like Sun City in Arizona. These folks you're argueing with are never going to vote for a school tax(or any tax) and would probably flock to an area if there were no school tax. The problem is getting the school districts on board and telling these grandparents if their grandchildren come to live with them they've got to move because, no school services.

I could change my mind with hard cold facts. They have to be hard cold facts. Times are hard for most of us.

JSmith can you not read?  "Van Horn." Can you say it? Van Horn is , I repeat, is not bursting at the seams! The kids can be divided up and a part can be sent to Van Horn.  Do you understand?

I can read. You obviously don't understand because you were not at the meetings being held in 2007. Parents brought homes in certain areas so there children could go to either William Chrisman or Truman. They were concerned that if they voted yes (2007) that boundaries lines would be changed. Superintendent Hinson assured them that a yes vote would not change those boundaries. That is why Van Horn is not an option for Williman Chrisman and Truman overcrowding. Van Horn will soon be in the same position of overcrowding with all the new families that are moving in. My block alone went from 2 to 3 kids to 15 kids. Well behaved kids I might add. Kids Are Our Future!

.......what he doesn't understand is this.......when I went to Truman?.......nobody  I knew wanted to go to Chrisman or especially Van Horn.......that hasn't changed at all..........it's kind of liekhow people in Independence don't want to live in Grandview or KC , KS.....or maybe how people in Lee's Summit wouldn't  want to live in Blue Springs.......for whateevr their reasons.........people are funny that way.......like driving certain cars......soo we're not just talking about equal buildings and a few lines here or there.......people have investments in real estate.......homes.........friends.........sports teams...........and shuffling them  around to accomodate whateevr?...........good luck on that......not feasable.........then htere is the issue of city pride and  "keeping up with Jones"......my taxes in Lee's Summit were going up $200 evry other year to pay for all the "Pentagon style" schools.......going up in rapid succession.......state of ther art...I don't know if anybody wants to acknowl;edge these things .....or if nobody wants to admit it.........Van Horn was always like the "Chrysler" of the  "Big Three".........demographics of $$$$$$$$.............more violence........different  personality than the other two schools.......I don't even have any kids .........or grandkids........so I'd just as soon have my money.......I'm not informed enough to be involved at this point........but those thoughts.....that reflect my "take" on the situation.........if all three schools were exactly alike......with exactly alike neighborhoods and exactly alke evrything else?.........people STILL prbably would choose up sides and draw their lines......because it's human nature.........right ......or wrong........no offense to ANYBODY.............

eldoggg

Jsmith, I now see where you are coming from, so you are one of those moms with kids that either go to Wm Chrisman or Truman, am I right so far?  No one predicted this recession we are now in.  Things change, promise are no longer, because you see in order for the promises to be kept, it has to be voted on. Chrisman and Truman H.S. need LOTS OF REPAIRS FIRST before we need all the bond money spent on a New High School.  Then and only then would we consider a high school for the wealthy.

........that makes perfect sense to me........before you  "move on up to the East side?".......to the neighborhood in the sky?..........take care of those whom you want to take care of you.......

eldoggg

I see this as spend money wisely and get the best gang for the buck.

Well said eldoggg!

ELISA A 4th high school only allows the rich kids and poorer kids to be seperated!  Like Western Independence and 39th street.  (Emerald City)

I said that we need to treasure what we have. Times are to hard to think about a new school. That means I am with you who ever you are.   xox

You are absolutely correct ELISA, we do not need another High School!  We need to take care fo what we have and we have a High School Van Horn which can hold up to 1,200 easily they only have 300 students there anyways

Van Horn has 620 students, but why let facts get in the way of a good argument.
Check http://www3.indep.k12.mo.us/VanHorn/About_Van_Horn.html
But I am sure the school district changed the web page after reading the blogs, conspiracy theorists always have an answer for any facts that do not fit their preconceived notions.  Put your tinfoil hat back on and get to blogging!!!

Fernglen, ...Ease on down...Ease on down the R O A D! Capacity is 1,200 students, thing called recession and not being fair to the other schools you guys have not maintained and forgot about!  That amount of students is not correct as everyone knows! ... Ease on down, the R O A D, ...

Sounds like we may have to many people like Marcie when it comes to their kids. What do you think???   xox

WERE ALL JUST WASTING OUR TIME HERE DISCUSSING THINGS.
Buy the way how did U find out about this ???? Some one tell U ????

jsmith, we are talking about Independence Boundaries, Wm, Chrisman, and Truman, boundaries being shared with Van Horn.  For Example some going to Chrisman could now go to Van Horn.

I addressed that issue. Prior to the election(2007) Superintendent Hinson assured us that there would be NO boundary changes where William Chrisman or Truman would be going to Van Horn. Van Horn is currently at approximately 60-65% capacity and growing. As word spreads that we are no longer in the KCMOSD more families will move into western Independence.

I have attend the LINC meetings. Van Horn is lucky to have Sean Akridge. You are right words spread. I feel Van Horn has what it takes to "Shine". Keep up the Good Work!!! The bloggers want whats best for all our kids too. Answers are hard to find. I hope you keep blogging back to us. All of us know kids are our future

j smithI sorry but if you are in western Independence and they build a new High School and Van Horn is not at full capacity, then  they would have to change boundaries, if the bond goes to a vote, the people in Western Independence may vote no.  Then what?  William Chrisman and Truman need lots of work, this bond does not address those issues.  I am against the new High School, as William Chrisman and Truman do not benefit.

With the new high school only William Chrisman and Truman boundaries would change. A new high school will benefit William Chrisman and Truman because of the overcrowding. I go to the meetings, I inform myself, and I don't look to see if I'm the only one to benefit. This is beneficial for the whole Independence School District.

You jsmith are one of those head bobbers the school district uses from time to time, to get things they want accomplished.  It still has to be voted on and Time will tell, if it goes through, my guess is it will not.

Name calling, how becoming. I talk of what I know and I walk my talk. How much time and money have you been spending ensuring children have a good education? I no longer have school age children in my home. I still care that all children receive a good education in a good environment.

Oh God, jsmith doesn't have kids at either school, but is a grandmother or sometimes grandmother and is going to tell me she is not a head bobber for the district.  This conversation with you is over.  You vote your way and I will vote my way.  I am extremely involved with all my kids.  However, I know how thing work and how they can use people, I have children in the district you do not.

I have no ties to the Independence School District other than living in the district and my children and grandchildren going to school in that district. Where do you come up with the fourth school is for the wealthy kids? Do you not drive beyond your block? If put on the ballot I will be voting yes. This is America and you can vote as you please. I just find it interesting that you just say no to something you don't seem to have all the facts to.

I think you do not have all the facts nor can you retain information and digest it well.
