Sulfuric Oder is BACK In Independence!

On my way to work, it was that smell again.  It is not as bad (yet), but noticable.  I hope someone is investigating the uncovered spoiled soil. The community appreciate  (MISS ELISA) efforts, and would like to send her a thank you. My guess is they are resuming their digging today in Sugar Creek.  I hope this smell does not become a mainstay as in some larger cities, I have lived in.

Comments

I met a lady the other day who blames her health on living in Sugar Creek, she has had a kidney removed, her son had problems at school and needed an aid, her husband has breathing problems, and other issues.  She blames it on being a health nut and growing herbs in her garden and then eating them all in Sugar Creek.

Don’t know how many other ways to say this ???
But do U realize that most of the little 50’s houses in
SC sold for $3 to $6,000 ????
People moved there because they could buy a house.
If they could get a job at Amoco all the better….
It’s NOT like the refineries were invisible? Odorless?
People know what they were buying into ….
Like I said the other day about the Coal Miners in WV.
Hell they knew it was bad, but they needed to live and
Support their families…..
That was the way the World Used to be… U were responsible
For razing Ur kids????? NOT the Goberment……
We ate butter, drank ””Coke””ke cola, ate bacon daily & eggs?

I found a link for those of you who would like to know more about the enviornmental impact Armco has had on our area.

One of my dearest friends grew up in Sugar Creek. Her mother still lives their. Her grandmother lives in Sugar Creek too. They don't know anyone that became sick from the Refinery. My friend said the Refinery was good to the people of Sugar Creek. The court records tell a different story. What is the truth? Refinery's were always built around the poor. I would like to think everything is just fine too.

ELISA, This new digging is detrimental, It just makes sense, what if they have already dug up more benzene, or who knows what else.  Some Yahoo, does not know what he is doing or no one cares about the consequences to  the old or the young here!  The difference is most  people have learned from their previous mistakes.  I hope a fast one is not being pulled as my gut instinct say it is not a good thing for the people here.  Mminnoe is right it is all about money, you and I and others it is just to bad.

Don’t get me wrong I’m with U all, I want clean air and water etc…
But I’m old enough to realize the all mighty $$$$$$$$$$ always wins?
U take em to court U get a judgment, they go out of Bus and don’t pay?
6 months later they are back with a new name bus is on all over again?
It sucks but here were talkin damage done 50 years ago??? Everyone’s out of bus?
They really don’t build these things in POOR neighborhoods,
the poor people move in next door because it’s CHEAP???
Which came first the chicken or the egg. The Oil rig or the cabins built up around it????

The history of these are around the poor and people with out political muscle.

But we have to remember History to understand how this happens.
We were comin out of the depression, all through the 40’s times were tough.
People would move as close as they could to get a job and be able to walk to work.
This was an era of company towns, right next to Mills and Refinery’s Coal Mines etc…
Most people didn’t have cars; there were no busses, or trolleys.
People would do anything for a JOB…
A Mill job was as high payin as most could dream of….
They didn’t care if it smelled BAD, or if there was Coal dust in the air?
They had a job and could feed their flock, the poorer the people the more they would put us with.  When I was a kid most people in Sugar Creek spoke Polish.
My best friend Bill Kuklenski’s whole family of 13 kids spoke Polish?
It’s a new day now and should be cleaned up, but like most superfund sites it could take another 50 years to do it…

The Little Blue Trace Park theft of county park land has never been resolved. This may make a bigger crime of the actions of our public officials.

I don't know about this. What is this can anyone tell me?

Yes, this is about Saddle Ridge. In 2005 a contractor removed approximately 800,000 cubic yards of soil from county park  land. Independence residents paid for the repair of public road that the heavy truck traffic destroyed. The contractor may have used the topsoil to raise the ground level of a home development site, above its designated "flood plain" staus. This increased the valuation of the site immeasurably because it would have left the site unsuitable to qualify for TIF financing.

A multi-million dollar lawsuit on behalf of the Jackson County citizens was derailed because the contractor has  supported the re-election of many public officials. I feel a similar situation may be taking place in Sugar Creek. That is why determining where the land fill material is coming from is so important.

If I hazzard a guess I'd say LaFarge needed to get rid of some unwanted debris. They may just be looking for a place to unload the excess. LaFarge and Sugar Creek have a pretty cozy relationship.

Is this the site at Saddleridge Villas?

.....I knew an Eddie Kuklenski at Truman ...74-76........

Mminnoe, maybe you could ask the Examiner where the digging will be taking place, like a map of, and what they are going to unearth which is like "OPENING A CAN OF WORMS."  Is Independence going to like this smell of old petroleum, my guess is "NO!"  Money is one thing  but reducing the quality of life is another.

I doubt they know, Sugar Creek Buss is SC buss...
They have always marched to there own drummer...
the was a great movie made about a deal like this..
A Civil Action(1998) PG-13
In this true story, John Travolta
was the star  ..... a guy lost his law firm tryin the case for NOTHING..........
Erin Brockavich was a marcile....

She just would not stop. More than a miracle it was hard word that she believed in. I Love that movie.

I am sorry things have been so busy today. I want you to know we did drive down the 4th to look at the refinery one of the roads by it had a strong gas smell. People were having fun on the other side of it with fire works. I will let you know when I find any more out you do the same.   xox

ELISA,Thank you so much from Independence, Mo.   My secretary contacted Sugar Creek City Hall, then Public Works, and Fire Department.  ABSOLUTELEY, NO ONE KNEW ANYTHING.

Dude U have got to put Ur “Hearing” ears on???
In the late 40’s when ARMCO and big Oil were Kings here.
The Pollock’s lived in Sugar Creek because NO one else would because it smelled BAD?
But it was cheap and most of the people living there worked for One or the other?
So if they were givin U a check a little smell was ok, it smelled like Money?
Irish kids lived in Sheffield and Pollock’s lived in Sugar Creek?
Now the Mill is gone, the Refinery is gone the smell and the old Slavic community of Sugar Creek
is still with us. U notice the old people who have lived there their entire lives do not complain????
They knew it was an Oil refinery when they moved in????

Independence is now smelling the old refinary because of the current digging?  Is not Armco and Standard oil two different locations?  You ask your little friend Lucy what is going on, I will bet you she know all about it!

They were in different spots but ARMCO owned the refinery back when.
If there diggin the smell is prob worse but it was put there 50 years ago when no one cared because they had a job???
Sort of like goin to West Virginia and telling 5 generation Coal Miner
that black stuff on Ur face is BAD for U ????
We Hell he knows it’s bad, but that is how he’s made a living for 60 years and it still is????
Som u want to die from smell or starve to death???
That is how people thought in the 50’s
Like I said find me and ole Bohunk who is complaining???
Still smells like money to them …….

Mminnoe, you are right on the money!  Keep up the news reporting, even though you are not paid by the Examiner, they should put you on a retainer for you knowlege and expertise.  Also, knowing how this town works!

All that landfill, where does it come from? After they put fresh blacktop over it everything will be forgotten.
The silence is killing us and those who do the digging bury our problems.
The economy makes decisions for the poor, just the same as it does for the wealthy.

Witbbob, You seem quite educated, and you have knowlege of this area.  What should the townspeople do?  We know what is going on, the questions is "Are we gonna take it!"

Whenever public land is used, and this is eminent domain, contractors are hired by public officials. The sunshine law gives you the right to know how your money is spent.
Public officials are responsible for giving you the answers.
