I did some more searching and found a specific lawsuit that sheds light on "spoiled soil"

I had a sister that lived in Sugar Creek for years and they all knew the problems with what was going on there including a lot of the neighbors. My sister died at 39 years old due to several problems, but it was mostly due to the Amoco gas plant. I do know for a fact that EPA has investigated and is making them clean up the area, but it will take several years to get through all the layers of soil that has been contaminated. There are several people in Sugar Creek that did know what was going on, was never bought out and didn't care anymore after getting sick. They just figured it was too late to do anything!!!!
I am sorry to hear about your sister. What part of Sugar Creek did they live in?
Right off of the Northern end of Ash and the creek run through her backyard. Right along with some of the chemicals in her soil and straight through her drinking water.
Dragon Queen Lady, I am so sorry to hear about your sister! I do not know what to say. This is such an injustice for the people innocently exposed to all those chemical. I started a blog about the air quality today. My neighbors suspect it is digging today at Sugar Creek. Chemical exposure can do so much damage to the human body.
I didn't say it for sympathy from anyone, that wasn't the only thing that done her in, but it sure as heck didn't help! My whole point was there were more people that knew about it and just didn't do too much, my niece's and nephew are still being exposed to this day and they have problems. The grandmother refuses to help them and there is nothing we can do, they no longer have parents! Both my sister and brother-in-law died and most of it was the exposure! THANK YOU anyways.......
Lon Walters (816) 472-1400 he is with The Walters Law Firm who did the case of poor Mr. Melvin Mathison that lived in Sugar Creek Mo from 1970 to 1981.
This is crazy maybe they need to call EdwardsFirm.com 1-800-4750971 The attorney Nancy Ryan's family used was Lon Walters. The punitive damages were settled out of court for an undisclosed sum. What year did your sister and her husband pass away? What year did they move into Sugar Creek. The Refinery records show officials knew as early as March 1950 petroleum was migrating off site and into the neighborhood. They had been warned in 1948 that benzene at any level was unsafe. In 1957 it was confirmed product from the tanks, as well as from the process area, was leaking into faults, trenches and fissures in the bedrock in the southern perimeter and off-site of the refinery. In 1948 this Co. was told they should put their pipelines aboveground because of the cost they chose to place their piplines underground. They also bought used tanks and did not even test them before being filed with petroleun. What type of Co. could think so little about public safety they would only inspect their tanks on a 10 cycle when the industry standards were every 6 months to 5 years???
ELISA, You must be commended on your research, keep up the good work, as you are our spokesperson! There is a past here the big wigs want to pretend did not happen. I hope you can stir up some help for us!
Thanks but you are doing just as much.
........way to go ELISA !!!........

We need to find help for the people in Sugar Creek. We know for a fact documents reveal the refinery officials knew for a decade an average of 8,000 to 27,000 gallons per day were lost underground. This is what they admit to29,200,000 to 98,550,00 in 10 years were lost underground. We have not seen what The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and The Mo. Department of Natural Resources have done to honor their commitment to clean up this public safety nightmare.
This warrants a major investigation, I would never buy a house there! Every homeowner who has purchased a home there in the last 20 years should be aware of these findings and history of these documents!
People who buy a home in Sugar Creek are not told about any of this. We don't want to put fear in the hearts of the people in Sugar Creek. All of us should want to know the truth and the truth should not be so hard to find.
ELISA, This will take a mighty big investigative reporter who has people and justice on their agenda. May I ask you how many people in your shop have lived in that are in question?
What are you asking? We are a mom and pop shop . We live and work in Independence. I have people I know in Sugar Creek. Is that what you want to know? KCTV 5 is big and The Star is also. They just have to want to do it they are so busy. I am working with a group of people trying to put a program together called Jaws Of Justice for KKFI. I also work with Criminal Justice Task Force and Family Advocacy and Our Independence Crime Task Force and Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty all the groups are with justice on the agenda.
When the temperature hits 105 then I will drop a match on that pile of rubble. Let's see if it ignites.
Elisa, you are doing a great job, I am sure the people of Sugar Creek are thanking you right now.
Thanks so are you thanks for the stories lets dig up more. xox
Oh, and here is one more case I found interesting of someone who lived at 221 N. Ash in Sugar Creek

These poor people this just makes me sick. I put Sugar Creek Janet Nichols Elliott in Google and came up with a bunch check it out. We need a Environmental Justice Group. No one is in today but we will get them monday. I am going home for the day Happy 4th!!! Thanks for your help!!!
can u find out how much Nancy Ryan family have collected of the 13,3mil ?
They can't tell us that is part of the deal.
Is there any other material you all found?
Mminnoe, I could try.
point has always been, u can win, u can't get paid ?
Oh people got paid big bucks to shut up. They went out and got new cars and homes. They have lived in hell being sick and now it looks like it was never cleaned up.
ELISA, This is scary, if you know people around here you need to contact them to organize and get some attention on this! Pronto!
You are right things like this need a public out cry from all of us. The only reason KCTV 5 picked up on the story was because of all the blogging and phone calls people made. All of us should care about the people in Sugar Creek. Maybe this smell is not a public safety issue but the spoiled soil story just don't set well. This story sure needs a follow up.
Mminnoe, you were in nam, do not u recall agent orange. How our government tried to deny it caused probems? Many years passed before they accepted this.
