THANK YOU INDEPENDENCE!!! KIDS ARE OUR FUTURE!!!

Thank you Independence School District voters for voting for the levy increase. Our kids deserve to have a great education. My only hope is that the people getting the jobs to build the new schools and update and improve our other schools as much as possible are INDEPENDENCE RESIDENTS! I know 100% can't be but more of an effort needs to be made.

Thanks Jsmith for the blog post.  The citizens of Independence  demonstrated in this election one of the many reasons why Independence is such a great city.  We are progressive and are on the move toward a magnificent future.  I think other people are recognizing the value of living in our city.  That is why new elementary schools were needed.
I join in congratulating the voters of Independence on their superb decision to overwhelmingly vote in favor of the bond issue.
Thanks to the Examiner for their excellent coverage of the issue.

THANK YOU Pastor Bob for all you have done. To my good friend Senator Victor Callahan thank you for the educational legacy you are giving to our kids. Now maybe they will have a chance.

Good Afternoon JSmith!  I will agree with you on that, I really do hope that the Independence construction/electricians/etc crews will get the bids and we can keep the money right here in the Independence area.....

The flyers they were handing out at the schools through Monday said that they were going to hire local workers. In fact I quote "hire local construction workers to do the building and remodeling projects, bringing 1200-1500 more jobs to Independence"

Of course, that could mean they would be bringing Kansas City Metro Area workers to do the work over here in Independence.

And as far as the construction down on 39th street and who the city hired, the City of Independence is a different entity from the Independence school district so we'll see what happens.

And I'm kind of answering a lot of posts on this thread so this isn't all directed at you DL.

dwood87 do you still have one of those flyers? I'd like to get my hands on one of them.

I'm looking at the one that Benton Elementary sent home, I might have one from Chrisman, but I'm not sure on that one. I can type in the whole flyer if you really want me to, it has 4 points for the school district and 3 points for the upgrades at Benton specifically.

Would you mind? When I go to the meetings I like documentation.

Benton Families have the opportunity to vote Tuesday, November 3, 2009

The proposed $85 million bond issue will allow the district to:

purchase 0% bonds. [This is like having a home loan with no interest payment saving millions of dollars.]

payoff of current leases. This almost $2 million savings from the operating fund can then be used to continue to pay for faculty and staff.

hire local construction workers to do the building and remodeling projects, bringing 1200-1500 more jobs to Independence.

build two new elementary schools,

remove the mobile units at Benton because of the addition of four NEW Benton classrooms.

make safety and technology upgrades at Benton.

remodel the Benton office area to better serve the cummunity, students, and staff.

These improvements are possible for an average of $1.50 per month, per family.

*Please call the school office at 521-5390 if you have any questions.

That's what it says exactly except for some special characters and such.

dwood87 THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I plan to hold their feet to the fire on this one. I will be checking this out when the work starts. I'm not going to say how I will get this info but I know I can.

Not a problem, if I see the one that we got from Chrisman I'll type that one is as well.

THANK YOU dwood87! I appreciate your help.

DWood, I was about to take it personal until I saw the last line, LOL........  I knew that, but they still need to base their looking on the Indep citizens too.  Not just JACO!

That's what I took the info sheet and the video they were showing to mean was that they were going to try to keep the workers local from Independence.

One only needs to look at the last 3 "big" projects in Independence to know the outcome of that answer.

I think it is a total CROCK that Independence residents are paying hard earned money to employ people from Johnson County. I hope everyone will join in and ask that as many Independence residents be employed to build and improve our schools.

I totally agree with you....  the money needs to go toward our citizens to help with getting a job....  Just imagine how many Indep citizens would get employeed if they would do it!

Yeah, I know, but we can all still hope and pray though!  I think they need to stop messing over all the local contractors that can do the job....
