Give Amtrak some credit: A pleasant day on the train

Hey, folks, it works. Or at least it can work.

On The Examiner’s opinion page, I’ve been both supportive and critical of Amtrak’s service across Missouri. Great service, but too many delays – but it’s been getting better.

Lots of good movies this year, few that are great

I'm wondering what people are thinking about the best movies of the year. The Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild have given their awards, and the Oscars are coming up soon.
I'll get the ball rolling with some random thoughts.
First, I was stunned that "Gran Torino" was shut out. It's about humanity, connection and sacrifice, not profanity and racism.

Late night at the Election Board

We have results for 78 of 250 precincts here at the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners, and they're saying midnightish for final results.

Not sure any great trends can be divined from partial numbers, although Kay Barnes (Congress, 6th District) is down by a whole lot in Jackson County, and that can't be good for her. Nixon still at 60 percent here.

And look at local incumbents: Rep. LeVota, 63 percent; Rep. Salva unopposed; Rep. Dougherty, 64 percent; Rep. Dusenberg, 56 percent; Rep. Pratt, 58 percent. Year of change? Sure, but we like our local incumbents.

Still awaiting early results

Hi, gang. It's going to be a fun night watching the returns.

Hello, all.

As promised in today's Examiner, I'll be blogging throughout the evening as election results flow in. Just my thoughts on the passing parade.

Actually, I'm doing double duty. I'll be calling in election results to The Examiner and to The Associated Press – a fine old election night tradition – and then during the long waits between updates I'll be blogging, checking the Internet and, no doubt, getting minute-by-minute text message updates from my 16-year-old. He's into following the news, which warms my heart. He's not going into journalism, which is even better.
