Words to live by

I had this co-worker who should have used more discretion. Instead of just letting it go, he pushed a point with the boss that threatened to bring of grief on the whole crew.

"You arrogant ass," I said, "You've killed us."

Quick – name that movie.

Fortunately, my friend got the reference and got the joke. Instead of popping me between the eyes, he laughed heartily, and domestic tranquility was maintained.

I've been thinking lately about the phrases from film that have worked their way into the daily language, everything from "Frankly, my dear ..." and "Of all the gin joints in all the world ..." to "I feel the need – the need for speed" and "I've got a bad feeling about this." At one point I thought we as a society had all become cliche jukeboxes incapable of original thought, needing to lurch from cliche to cliche to communicate. (Come to think of it, there was a "Star Trek: Next Generaiton episode just like that ...) But then my brain started to hurt from trying to be creative, so I just gave up and joined in.

One of my favorite lines from any western ever is, "Now I don't want to kill you, and you don't want to be dead" (Danny Glover in "Silverado"). It's a great line, but there's not much use for it in daily life. So I'm wondering what the list of best movie one-liners for the ages looks like. (And no "Seinfeld" references. That's a whole different discussion. "Not that there's anything wrong with that.")

All you have to do is blog. You know how to blog, don't you?

Oh, the movie I mentioned at the outset? It's the second in command yelling at Tupulov – the sub captain sent to kill Sean Connery and crew in "The Hunt for Red October" – as their own torpedo has come back on them. Good line, Then they died.

"Need a little help, Trinity."

"There's No Crying In Baseball..." - Tom Hanks

I'm surprised nobody came out with Eastwood's Dirty Harry "c'meon, make my day."

'Tombstone' Kurt Russell(Wyatt Earp) Val Kilmer(Doc Holiday)        Best O.K. Coral shootout film ever, more great one liners, they're just too numerous. One in particular,  Doc is pinned down with Curly Bill, Wyatt, et al. Doc is sick with TB and Curly Bill says to Doc " Doc what are you doing here, you ought to be home in bed" Doc responds "Wyatt's my friend" and Curly Bill says "Heck, Doc, I've got lots of friends" to which Doc replies "I don't".

I know you haven't seen Caddy Shack (pratically a movie watchers sin), but one of my favorite lines to drag out whenever it is pouring rain outside is from Carl the Groundkeeper: "I'd keep playing, I don't think the hard stuff is going to come down for awhile yet."

whos this, "Hey I got a question, how u gonna get back down that hill ????"

One of my favorites that I constantly use on my work crews comes from John Wayne in "The Cowboys" To get the crew moving he prodded them with "We're burnin' daylight".

Yes, as a Scoutmaster, I've been known to use that one mtself.
