Thanks for pointing this out to everyone, ELISA !
I too want to congratulate Office Romey!
When I first started attending the City-wide Neighborhood Watch meetings, I quickly became disappointed and critical. Each meeting was poorly-planned and relied a lot on guest police officer speakers who often cancelled because they were called-out on an emergency call. And there was almost nothing in the way of a "backup plan".
Meeting attendance used to be around 15 people. And I felt bad when meetings were cut-short and people who drove across town had to turn around and go back home.
Since Officer Romey took charge of the City-Wide Neighborhood Watch meetings, the program has made a HUGE turn-around. Attendance is often in the 80+ range (numbers, not age <grin!>). Yes, some of that attendance increase has been due to increased crime, especially in the Susquehanna area, but folks would quickly STOP attending.... if it were not for Rob's carefully-planned and well-executed meetings.
Rob makes useful presentations, often using an overhead projector and a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation (which he usually offers afterwards in the form of printed hand-outs or a downloadable version). I have enjoyed the guest speakers and found a lot of their information quite useful. (I have a deeper understanding of WHY the police want us to call 9-1-1....why it is useful from a legal standpoint.)
In my humble opinion, before the coming of Officer Romey, the entire program screamed to citizens "We don't really respect you or your time. This is just a token effort. Just dail 9-1-1 and don't really think or question what we tell you."
NOW, the behavior of Officer Romey and the other guests officers he has had says to me... "We respect you and your time. We can't do this job without you. The information you provide us is critical in helping us take the bad guys off the street and convicting them. Dial 9-1-1, but give us a good description of the car or person, give us house numbers and direction-of-travel if you can. And if you have questions about why we're doing something or what we're doing, please ask!"
The whole thing is truly a miraculous turn-around that I really scratch my head in wonder at. Officer Romey deserves a heap of credit! (I just hope they don't promote-and-replace him now!)
DRaasch all of what you have to say is true about Officer Romey. He does deserve a BIG Heap of Credit. It's clear it's not just a job to him. He truly cares and thats a blessing for all of us in Independence. Thanks for your blog. xox
