Don't miss your chance to learn about COMBAT. Our County Executive Mike Sanders along with Stacey Daniels-Young, PhD. COMBAT Director will be there to answer questions. Combat's mission is "Protecting Communities & Healing Families..." COMBAT is dedicated to reducing drug-related crime, providing substance abuse treatment for nonviolent offenders who have demonstrated they want to get off drugs, and preventing youth from experimenting with drugs.
In Nov. 1989 we the voters of Jackson County approved a 1/4 cent sales tax to address substance abuse and its related crime. Community Backed Anti-Drug Tax, known as COMBAT. Once again we will vote to keep or drop this sales tax. The choice will be ours. I plan to vote yes for this tax. I would Love to hear from all the Bloggers. How do you feel about COMBAT and what do you know about COMBAT?

Topics will be Crime in Independence, COMBAT and a possible new program for Hill Park with Independence Parks & Recreation. The Parks & Recreation Director Eric A. Urfer wants to work with all of us to help make our parks safer, but we truly need your help. They would like to kick off this new program at Hill Park. Please come and learn how we can all become part of the solution to take back our city. It only will take TINY efforts to make a big difference in our city. Please don't forget to bring all of your old Examiners and papers for our Library's recycle bin. Our Library charges us 0 to have all of our meetings. The children in our community have great programs at our library that many don't know about. Seven great ones are for the Teens. These programs are free. Our Branch Manager Ritchie Momon and I both had the honor to recommend one of our area girls to a college. She will be the very first in her family to go. This is not just another Kansas City Public Library. It's like a little family serving our community. Please support it with all of your used reading material and you too will be part of Great Things To Come! Because the best things in life are FREE! We sure hope to see you at our meeting!!! xox

I've said in the past I'll not vote for another tax that doesn't have a sunset provision for it to be reevaluated. This is what I'm looking for in a sales tax type funding. I've not heard any controversy that would make me not support the tax. I would be interested to hear the plan of what can be done to make the program stronger and more effective.
This is not a forever tax. I have asked them to e-mail us a copy of the ballot language so we can post it. I too would not vote on a tax with out a sunset provision. I have only worked on the Drug Awareness Picnic Committee. I am friends with Nancy Kwilas from The Old Northeast Agency. I have seen first hand what COMBAT'S support means to Old Northeast. At the picnic the kids had a chance to read their poetry from the poetry contest. We had 19 poems to judge. Each poem had a expert little writer with a strong voice that reached out to us and made it not just hard but almost impossible to pick one winner but we had to. We could not pick a second and third winner. We called them both Runner Ups. All the kids understood first hand what drugs have done to them and their families. Shall the County of Jackson continue its countywide anti-drug sales tax
(COMBAT) at the rate of one-quarter of one percent for a period of seven years for the
purpose of the arrest, prosecution, incarceration, treatment and prevention (including
D.A.R.E. programs) of drug related offenses and violent crimes, and the judicial
processing of adult and juvenile violators of such offenses? The proceeds of this tax
shall be deposited in a special Jackson County Anti-Drug Sales Tax Trust Fund,
separate from the general fund or any other county funds.

If you are in favor of the question, place an "x" in the box opposite "Yes." If you are
opposed to the question, place an "x" in the box opposite "No."
4) Section If a majority of the qualified voters voting at said election shall vote in favor
of the approval of this ordinance, the tax provisions hereof, if renewed by the County
Legislature, shall be binding and shall become effective April 1, 2011, and shall
automatically terminate seven years after that date, March 31, 2018.
5) Section The Clerk of the Legislature is hereby authorized and directed to notify the
Jackson County and Kansas City Boards of Election Commissioners of the adoption of
this Ordinance no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 25, 2009, and to include in said
notification all of the terms and provisions required by §115.125, RSMo 2000.

Effective Date: This ordinance shall be effective immediately upon its signature by the
County Executive.

You forgot the number one reason for COMBAT to exist. It keeps politican's girlfriends employed.
I am generally in favor of this tax, but I would like to know what you mean by your statement that it "keeps politican's girlfriends employed". Are you being facetious, or is there some kind of scandal associated with this tax that we taxpayers should know about? If there is something to your statement, I feel you should throw out some proof. I'm in favor of good programs that fall within the parameters of what a government entity should Constitutionally be doing, but if there's waste or fraud I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

I luv ya eldoggg, but I'm not tryin to stir up something.... someone else threw out what seemed to me to be an accusation of wrongdoing.... I just want to know if they're just rambling or really know something.... the sword cuts both ways, because if the person is just throwing this stuff out there with no proof then it's sure to be just enough to make someone only marginally committed to the COMBAT tax vote no. I just think it's better to either nip things like this in the bud so the COMBAT tax has a fair chance, or to fully expose any wrongdoing. Just like I expect the same with other government programs, all I'm asking for is the truth...........

.....I was just jokin......you know I'm a friendly dog.........I wanted to know some dirt too.......I'm for Combat OF COURSE..........and in reality it's not against the law for somebody's girlfriend to work somewhere.......ROFL.........they have to work SOMEWHERE.........the implication could have been construed that Combat didn't do much OTHER than that...........since the statement made the allegation that "girlfriend's employment" was the PRIMARY reason for the existence of COMBAT........i'm doubting that..........perhaps there is some bitterness for an affair by someone...............I DID detect some hostility.......

The "politician's girlfriend" was just repeating some accusations. Do I have proof? No I have a job, no time to scrounge around the city peeking thru windows. It is rather well known in political circles that the way to keep your mistress supported is to get her a taxpayer funded job at some non-profit. How many are funded by COMBAT? I don't have a clue but I would be willing to bet its several.

I think reason has COMBAT confused with John Edwards presidential campaign. The Rieley Hunter employee. I've no heard anything, but then again I'm not in Jackson County political sex scandals.
