The Time Has Come

It is time the American people insisted on term limits of members of congress and effectively rid ourselves of the professional politician. Under the present system the Senators and Representatives maintain a presence in Washington so long they forget the people who sent them there. They become enamored of their own importance, begin seeking their own enrichment and become the pawns of influential lobbyists.
At the present time 27 Senators have served in the senate for terms of over 18 years. Of the nine Missouri Representatives in the House, only two have served for less than eight years, one has served 22 years and another for 16.
With the seniority system followed in both bodies, the most powerful committee chairmanships are assigned to these long-term members of the majority party, be they Democrat or Republican. The president pro tempore of the Senate is traditionally given to the most senior member of the majority party. Currently that is Sen. Byrd of W. Va. who has been in the senate for 50 years. This longevity and the subsequent placement of power in the care of the few perennial members of the bodies leads to misuse of authority and in the extreme case, corruption of the office. History has shown that members of either body who gain positions of great influence within the government often become involved in illicit affaires, influence peddling, bribery and other malfeasance of office. Practically all long tenured members tend to lose touch with the wishes and desires of the people who sent them to Washington and begin legislating not for the good of the people but for their own grandioseness. The recent Town Hall meetings held in conjunction with the proposed health care reform gave vivid proof of this.
The twenty-second Amendment to the Constitution imposes a limit of two terms upon the office of the President. I propose the same limitation be placed upon Senators and Representatives. Senators should be limited to two terms of 6 years each and Representatives should be limited to two consecutive 4-year terms. Senatorial elections would be as they are now, with 1/3 of the members being elected every two years. The members of the house would be elected every 4 years, as is the President and Vice-President. This latter provision would mean that Representatives spend less time campaigning and more time tending to the nation’s business.
The amendment would be as follows:
Section 1. No person shall be elected to the Senate or House of Reprentatives more than twice.. A person holding the position of Senator or Representative at the time this amendment becomes effective may complete his/her current term of office and may stand for election to one additional full term.
Section 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

Look at that, Civil and I are in agreement with something. I think that not much good comes from career politicians. I've also thought for awhile about their ability to give themselves raises. I think that that power should be taken away. Instead I would like to see them make what the average American makes every tax year. You want a raise, you figure out a way to raise the average American's salary. With all the perks of office, this shouldn't be a problem for anybody.

We vote these people in WHY??? Year after year I ask WHY???

Elisa, I'm a little under the weather today so this'll be short, but you are absolutely correct... the problem lies with US, the people who keep electing these morons. Term limits are not the answer. Our founding fathers wrote about this, and purposely made it so the people can't recall members of Congress. Did you know that Senators used to be appointed by the State legislatures and not elected? That changed in (I believe) 1913. Readers may want to do some research on their own, you can start here . And trust me, we definitely DO NOT want a Constitutional Convention, especially right now.... there would likely be no Constitution left if Obamanuts had their way. It's been said that once the people discover that they can vote to pay themselves money out of the Treasury, that the country is doomed (paraphrasing here). One thing that might be worked on is eliminating the way things are set up to virtually guarantee only a 2-party system.........

By the way, I'm SO happy to see that you're running, but I think it should be for mayor and not city council :-)

Teaparty has things a bit confused here I believe. If a Constitutional conference is called, all items in the constitution can be considered, not just the item for which the conference was called. I am not asking for that. I want a bill, initiated in either body, ratified by the other and ultimately ratified by the states. In that scenario only the matter in question can be addressed, not the entire constitution. Also, Obama is a constitutional lawyer. I don't believe he is interested in changing it, but he knows it backwards and forward and will use all its weaknesses to further his agenda. That's much easier than doing an overhaul.

TeaPartyKC sorry to hear you are not feeling well but as always I enjoyed your blog. You make great points also thanks for your advice about the Mayors set. Who knows how the elections will end. Only God knows and he always knows best. Take care and get better!   xox

......I like the idea........... but how would we get the "suits" that are there now to pass it?.............

VOTE Them Out!!!   xox

If we could do that term limits wouldn't even be discussed, but unfortunately "voting them out" is easier said than done. I suspect most Congressional Districts are similar to mine. At the Democratic Primary there is no choice - only the incumbent is on the ballot. The Republican primary might have a couple of candidates who nobody ever heard of. At the General election there is the Democratic incumbent and a Republican mystery man. The vote in the district is and always has been heavily Democratic. Guess who wins. Same scenario plays out in heavily Republican Districts as well. There is usually a Libertarian Candidate who rarely ever garners more than 2 to 3 percent of the vote. Third parties do exist and they do get on the ballot but they hardly ever register with more than a trickle of the population. If we truly want a change it will come through term limits. If there is a better way I would like to hear it.

I'd like to see an end to the way a 2-party system is virtually guaranteed. I'd prefer to see primaries where everyone interested tosses their hat in the ring, declaring a party only if they want to, and then the top 2 candidates run in the general election.... whether it's 2 Dems, 2 Repubs, 1 of each, 2 other parties, or some combination thereof.

We've also got to get past this "mystery man" thing. Instead of making an effort to find out something about ALL the candidates and then making an informed choice, we just vote for whatever name we can remember. So that's why the big money special interest people keep getting in there, because they can dump alot of money into snappy campaign ads.... and the honest, hard-working guy who isn't out there screaming hope & change & making impossible promises gets left in the dust. Vote on actual qualifications, not just what you hear in some campaign ad. Oh, and when they say they have "experience", that means they already posess the skills to make you bend over and squeal. I for one am sick & tired of experience, I think experience is the reason for the mess we're in now. Unless I see an incumbent who's done an OUTSTANDING, blemish-free job, I'm sure as h*ll not voting to re-elect them.

When we find someone we really believe is a good candidate, we need to get behind them and campaign for them. Do not sit on your hands and "hope" the person wins. Again, you can sh*t in one hand and wish in the other, see which gets filled first.

I think that we could get term limits right now if we really tried, but as long as WE THE PEOPLE just vote for whatever steaming pile of crap whose name we happen to remember, even term limits aren't going to save us....

There are other changes I'd like to see, like limiting the written length of bills, limiting the actual amount of time that lawmakers meet (I think they have just WAY too much time on their hands to dream up some of this crap), paying them only for the actual work they do (miss a vote, or vote "present" and you don't get paid, etc), eliminate the lifelong perks for what is (or should be anyway) a very temporary job, etc etc.

It will be interesting to watch the 4th congressional Ike Skelton's race. He's been traditionally a moderate but with the lefties in the majority he's had to vote more liberal ie cap and trade, $1 trillion stimulous so he could keep his chair. Pelosi won't give you a bisquit if you're not on board. Swoffer, a two term state senator announced he's running for the 4th congressional and he's more of a moderate republican.  We'll see, these are interesting times!!

I'm not in Skelton's district and know little about him, but in my book, anybody who would vote against their principles just to keep a committee chair has no spine, no morals, no ethics, and is surely not someone that I want representing my interests. If they're willing to sleep with the devil to keep their job then I have no use for them.

WHY DO WE TOLERATE SUCH BEHAVIOR??????????

From what I've seen on how the sausage gets made to elect the Pope I wouldn't expect too much divine guidance on the metriculation to the top in the political process. It's just the way the game is played. I do think the most expedient process is to target these moderate, blue dog democrats and if it's successful even if the democrats do keep the majority of the congress you'll hear Pelosi announce she wants to spend more time with the family and the leadership will moderate for survival.

......Hank Stram likes "metriculation".........that was the word I was trying to think of the other day from Hank's famous soundbyte............lol.........

eldoggg

Yea, thats where I first remember hearing the word. Ol' Hank would talk about metriculating down the field for a TD. That was when the coach knew more that 1 syllable 'F' words for sound bytes

.......maybe Todd's mother spanked him alot when he was small.............

Boy, its good you aren't in Spector's state. He changes parties in order to keep his Senate seat. He's gone from Dem. ro Repub. and now back to Dem. because he figured he couldn't win the Rebuplican Primary, but he can win as a Democrat? Go figure.

Spector is someone I wouldn't EVER vote for, Republican or Dem, even if ACORN was offering me a pantload of money to do so......... he's surely one of the more pathetic figures in politics..... when I look at these clowns I just keep thinking......... is this REALLY the very best that this country can come up with?????????????........ God help us...................

.........that's why they call it politics.........power corrupts...............

About the only way I know is the same way women got the vote and MLK got the Civil Rights legislation. The Tea Party groups could make it a part of their  cause and push it thru demonstrations. Be a tough fight, but I think it can be won.

They could use Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) as a poster child. This guy is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, which controls the purse strings of the entire federal government. He was named to the "Most Corrupt" list of the Citizens for Reponsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW):
"Representative Jerry Lewis (R-CA) is a sixteen-term member of Congress, representing the 41st district of California. Currently the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, his ethics issues stem primarily from the misuse of his position as chairman of the committee to steer hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks to family and friends in direct exchange for contributions to his campaign committee and political action committee. Rep. Lewis was included in CREW’s 2006, 2007, and 2008 reports on congressional corruption." - http://www.crewsmostcorrupt.org/summaries/lewis.php

He and Charlie Rangel make a pair. Just goes to show misconduct knows no party.

......sounds like Pete's on board..........

eldoggg

Pete's list of worst offenders are about split (D),(R). Maybe ACORN will get the Dem signatures and the Tea Party folks will get the Republicans on an initiative petition to get the worst of the worst in each others closet. Get em in 'a little bit of a crossfire', huh Curly Bill

That's right. I'm in favor of booting out every A-hole on that list, (D) & (R) alike.
The reason I brought up Lewis as the poster child isn't because he's a Republican, but because he's the ranking scumbag on the most powerful committee in Congress.
