Fights in the Park
Other cities have Saturday Night Movies in the Park. Independence has Weekend Fights in the Parks. Channel 41 just ran a clip of teens fighting in one of the city parks (I came in too late to identify the park) Why the devil did not somebody with the city arrange to have that shown Monday evening? The city did a miserable job of selling the police services sales tax. They never explained why do they need $6M per year forever. Why did they not explain that a sunshine law is not viable if personnel costs are involved. They never explained that by Police Services they meant additional officers. They never got the business community involved. There were no published endorsements from any local groups. Public meetings are terribly ineffective ways to get the message out. First most people don't know about them, second they conflict with other elements of the citizens day and third unless there is considerable interest in the subject nobody bothers. The city may not be able to run ads on TV, radio and newspapers, but surely they could find some PAC that would be willing to do so. City Scene is a good outlet, but its not able to tell the story the way a 30second TV spot can. I hope the city tries again and gets on the PR wagon the next time.

Tina Wyatt was on noon news about the fights, she the one got the phone pic's, says she was attacked by a bunch of boys there, has called 911 over 2 doz times, I wonder if she Voted NO??????
She should say she saw a gun, that would probably get the cops out there in a hurry. Or maybe not
......ROFL......you mean like the cops do when they shoot somebody dwood87?..........

Ya know, maybe you're right.... everyone who voted NO should have to wear a big yellow star on their sleeve so the police will know who to serve and who to ignore. THAT will teach 'em!

Like a penny of that money was ever going toward more cops! The Mayor said that there are officers in the pipeline, that is, in the academy and various steps along the way to being put on Independence streets. If they recieved $1,000,000,000 in cash today, it would take them a year to put one officer on the streets with it, and it would only pay for his/her first week on the job. Don't kid yourself one bit, the tax increase had nothing at all to do with putting cops on the street.

Hey Nog have U been watchin the street fights over there on Friday nights?
Maybe step in a stop a few when ever U get a chance?
It’s so funny I’ve been preaching that U can’t hire Cops like guys at a burger joint, and Now U want to lecture ME on that???? ROFL..
But U got what U voted for NOW LIVE with it???????
U all gave the Mayor & the Council the right to do NOTHING???
GOOD WORK?

DRaasch, you have given the blogs NEW LIFE! Keep 'em coming!
I went to watch this, but got distracted by the young man havin lunce right under it???
Maybe I'll get back later???
$1,000,000,000 for one week/year? Helluva cop. Where can we find him/her?
I think the unsaid point was that out of that million dollars, a pittance would go to police salaries, while the rest WOULD go towards a shiny new building!
I found it fascinating that, the day before the vote, I was on I-70 passing by the Blue Parkway exit. Looked to my left and that nice multi-storied (8 stories, maybe? didn't count) office building that's right there on the corner, across the street from O'Charlies, had a big "for lease" sign on it. Like, as in, the whole building must be empty.
I LIKE IT, U a smart cookie keep em commin..........
You know, mminnoe, that tax didn't pass, but maybe you and the other pro-tax-people could take up a collection of oh I dunno... maybe 10 years worth of the additional taxes that YOU WOULD HAVE paid had it passed.... and then donate it directly to the police !!
If you believe in it that strongly, what's stopping you from rallying the other 4000 yes-sayers and doing some fund-raising ?
Well I rallied 21 of em to go vote from a wheel chair, if everyone else had did as well we could have won????
I'm not asking what you did in the past.
I'm saying you should do something NOW and in the FUTURE: cough up some money!
Hey I'll be gald to send em $.35 every time I spend $100??? thats what we voted to do???
My walkin around money is about $50 a week, so thats $1.40 a month time 12 = $16.20 so heck I'll send em the whole $20 bill for the year????? Don't bother me at all?????
That was about the magic number U came up with ?
It was an AVERAGE and it was actually assuming the population had gone UP since the last census, which it hasn't; it's gone down.
Perhaps you'd be better off doing what I'm doing: saving all my receipts from a week of normal shopping (walmart run, grocery store run, etc.) and then multiplying by 52 (and then factoring in that the City only gets SOME of that money -- gotta look up those percentages again) ! I think that'd be a whole lot more accurate.
....ROFL.........boys......boys.......why are we discussing this ultra moot point now?......... ha ha ha...........

Well I guess they should call Marilyn or the TEA party people, they will hot foot it over there and help out??
We don't have enough Cops??????
Oh cong-rates on the NO win folks! ! ! !! !?????
Sorry, mminnoe, but even with a "yes" vote, I'm afraid the extra police would not be around for another year or two yet to stop this for you. Oh, and by the way, we didn't have enough cops two years ago. Yet we survived.
As I've stated before, if the city can show me that they have spent my tax money wisely; that there is no fat or waste in their budget; that the police dept is being properly managed and is making wise use of their resources; that we truly need more police officers and that any new tax WILL BE used for that purpose and that purpose only; then I will campaign FOR such a tax and will use all resources at my disposal to see it passed. Until then, sorry, I'm not biting.

Hear, hear. I totoally agree with everything you said. Hey, if they would clear the 4,000+ DUI cases in Municipal Court at $500 a pop, they would have over $2,000,000. Oh, wait, those aren't priority, a hockey arena is.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and nothing good ever dies
I was looking at the voter results for bonds, levy increases and questions to retain sales taxes in surrounding communities like Kearney, Lake Lotawanna, Blue Summit ect. It looks like everyones balot issues passed but this Independence sales tax. And don't tell me Lotawanna and Kearney residents have more descretionary money than Indep, because Blue Summit passed a fire bond. You're right though this thing was'nt explained or promoted very well by the city and left a lot to the imagination of the voter
....c'mon dshrout....you know those "Emerald Cities" are full of McMansion neighborhoods.......we used to hunt deer around Kearney.......
eldoggg
Yea, and I used to rabbit hunt in Saddleridge and horseback ride on the Stone Canyon Golf course and do some fee fishin' at Mirror Lakes over at the Arbores and at the Hilburns there in the city of the county seat.
...ROFL.......what?.........no comprende'.....my point was that the aforementioned places were hardly a "sprawling metropolis" with plentiful residents with discretionary spending money.....but rather one ?...... Kearney , is as I remember it....... a place to get a beer after "deer hunting"........
eldoggg
My apologies, I thought your reference to Emerald City was they had money in the matress, Indep didn't. I do find it notable that 4 months ago Blue Summit Fire Dept had a special election to recall and oust 2 of its 3 directors and yet on Tues passed a sales tax for fire protection.
......I'm a smart @ss and my references to the "Emerald City" are my "tongue in cheek" response to the ENDLESS previous references to the "39th Street" area to the east of Independence Center......where a few "NO VOTERS" repeatedly referred to this area as the "Emerald City".....where the city wants to install a new police building........like it's "Hallbrook" or something........that's all.......ROFL..........it IS a funny reference......just not befitting of 39th street.......there are some nice homes in that area.......but it's hardly a McMansion area......I have fun with "words & phrases"......even IF some do not care for me.......... ha ha ha..............

The fights are happening at an elementary school playground, Clare-Mont (sp)? The one witness said that it goes on every weekend, and there is alcohol involved.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and nothing good ever dies
....well if a common person off the street knows this?.....it makes one wonder why the cops can't stop a few kids from "drinking & fighting" at the SAME place every week.....
