Good News - News Schools are Needed

My blog is about good news stories.  Kelly Evenson wrote an excellent “good news story” in today’s Examiner.  She spoke about a proposal to construct two new elementary schools in our city.  It is great news for our city to know that elementary schools are filled and that two schools are needed.  Instead of closing schools, we are in need of new elementary schools.

I am most familiar with Korte Elementary.  Our church has a wonderful relationship with the school.  I visit the school each week, serving as a Youth Friend.  Last year the school was full with an attendance a little over 500 students.  This year’s attendance is 630.  Can you imagine?  An increase of 100 students!

Where did all of these children come from?  My guess is that families see western Independence as a preferable portion of the metro area to live.  We have affordable housing, genuine community, and excellent schools.

The snapshot of education in Independence that is in my mind comes from my experience at Korte.  I am continually amazed by the Principal, Dr. Mallams, and his staff.  They relate to the children in a very positive, yet disciplined, manner.  The efforts of educators on behalf of the future leaders of our community is outstanding.  My thoughts go to superlatives when I think of the opportunities that are being presented to the families and children of our city through public education.

If the school bond issue passes in next Tuesday’s election, the building and trades personnel will also have good news.  Zero percent interest offered on a portion of the bonds is intended to stimulate the economy.  Building and Trades leaders voted unanimously to endorse the bond issue, because they know 1200-1500 of their members will go to work.  Putting these men and women to work in our community will help stabilize our community’s economy and will further build our community.  That’s good news!

Thanks Kelly, for an excellent article.  Thanks to The Examiner for providing space for people like me to express their opinions.

My two cents worth, or with today's inflation........1/2 cent worth? Although I have a son in middle school, I personally would like to see another High School. Chrisman and Truman both have trailers being used as classrooms. Why do they have trailers? Neither school has enough room for the number of students they have. This also creates a parking problem at least with Chrisman. I live behind Chrisman. I have between 8 and 10 cars a day parked along our short street. Ok....not really a big deal until you throw in the fact that our teenage kids can NOT find a trash can 10 feet away. They aslo walk right by a trash dumpster on their way of cutting through my yard to get to school. Friday night football games? This neighborhood is a joke. Thank God nobody has needed an ambulance or fire truck because they'd never fit down the street.
Now you're probably asking youorself or even yelling at me for moving so close to a high school. I bought this house after living on this street for all but 8 years of my 42 years of life. It was never this bad until about 5 years ago.
Thaks for letting me rant, even though was kinda off topic.

I know they're not talking about it with this election, but the Examiner's article said that they had 65 acres out east that they are looking at putting a high school and an elementary on. I attended 3 parent teacher conference this week and they all said that this bond would allow them to pay down the HVAC work they did a few years ago and save the school district somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 million dollars a year. Hopefully in a couple of years that would allow them to start construction on a new high school.

Thanks dwood87. That at least gives me a ray of hope.

My daughter had Dr. Mallums the first 4 years of her elementary school. He was an awesome principal. The school had skating parties once a month and there he would be out on the floor skating with the kids. He also knew every kid in that school by first name. He would get them at where the busses would drop the kids off every morning.

I'll be voting for the bond. It will take my property taxes up about 20 bucks a year I believe. And I know that the schools, especially the ones out in western Independence are overcrowded.

Hopefully the influx of kids in the schools does mean younger families are moving into Independence. And hopefully that means increased revenues for the city and we'll be able to do more things quality of life wise to make Independence even more attractive to more families.

I'm all for the bond issue.   My thinking is:

a)  We of the West Side owe a debt to Superintendent Jim Hinson and the School Board, who supported bringing us "into the fold" of the Independence School District.

b)  I see this as an investment...both in our kids and in the reputation and desirability of the community.   There's a REASON that people avoided moving to Western Independence in HUGE DROVES in the past... and that reason was the perceived lack-of-quality in the Kansas City Missouri School District.   The ISD already has a good reputation for quality.   I'm all for improving that further.

AMEN!!!

..........well  Pastor Bob............I can see YOUR point of view as a "man of God"...........bigger flock numbers and increase to the "House of the Lord".........potentially............bus those little buggers into Sunday School before they procure paint cans for graffitti.............but from MY perspective as a person without children?.............I remember my property taxes taking a $200 hike every two years in Lee's Summit to build all those "Pentagon sized" high schools..........call me selfish for having that little operation a few years back...............now I have to pay for the indiscretions of those who forgot to wear "party hats" in the late 90's  , early 2000's?.....( I am referring to your question of "where did all these children come from?).......ROFL...........no offense  "mon seigneur" ...............

Dear Mr. Doggg,

I enjoy your sense of humor.  You keep the blogs alive with your comments.  Thanks.

I wouldn't mind having a few more people in the pew -- all of the pews in our city for that matter.

Concerning the kids, mine are away at college and they cost a little more than the increase in taxes that will come about with the bond issue.

My daily prayer is for Independence to thrive and blossom.  I think education is a primary way that our city can become a magnificent place to work, worship, play and live.

It's always good to hear from you.  Have a great day.

As I always say "Your city is only as good as your school district." Boy are we really blessed to finally be a part of the Independence School District. THANK YOU Senator Victor Callahan as well as you Pastor Bob and all the others who helped to get us where we are today.

Pastor Bob.......you know I'm not really that tight .........lol..........I just like to bark ........when you said "where did all these kids come from?" , I had to laugh.........because the first thing that came to MY mind was "lack of birth control"............education is truly key to any society or civilization......America's hedonistic lifestyle , affluence and attitides have contributed to our falling behind in being a world leader in education.....this is what I have read.......less affluent societies have been stepping up their game for some time with education.....while many of our cities youth have fallen behind.......Detroit with a 35% graduation rate comes to mind as well as the KC school district losing their credentials...........I realize there are many variables here with the inner city , single moms , gangs and poverty........nevertheless the country needs to address whether our education system is antiquated in it's agriculturally oriented 9 month program...........would another hour a day be productive & efficient or non productive & harmful?...........as dshrout has pointed out before......the key to good property values and a thriving city is in it's schools...........that's what all potential residents are concerned with..........what's the school ratings?........and they can't educate properly with crowded classrooms.........how was THAT Pastor Bob?..............lol............heck I'm a product of the ISD........whatever THAT'S worth.......my English teacher is probably turning over in her grave ........although my typing teacher would be proud......I got a "C" in typing........I HATED typing class with a passion........I didn't take "Spanish" either........(I see THAT was a mistake)........well I've never been accused of being succint.............so I may be the fastest two fingered typist in the Emerald City...........lol................

Awww... see?   One semester of typing did a HECK of a lot more for my career than say, oh.... two years of German !!

....OK Mr.German........I've always been curious how "MOX NIX" should REALLY be spelled......it's one of my favorite expressions........

eldoggg

I have no  idea!

The ONLY German I remember after 2 years of German Class (and some 24 years of intervening time) is:

"Du bist auf ein Haufen mist !"

TRANSLATION:  "You are a pile of manure!"

why would you remember THAT line Robo?.........ROFL.......you don't use that when you get in a heated argument with the wife do you?.......mutter it under your breath at the boss?......on my question of "MOX NIX" , I think the first part is spelled macht or something......it's pronounced "MOX NIX"...........it means "what does it matter" or my translation "who cares?".....I would have expected more from a "kaiser eatin former teacher"..........ROFL.......

eldoggg

Oh, that sounds like you're saying "Macht nicht!"  which literally means "make nothing".  Hmmm.... I've never heard that expression before.

Hey, what can I say?  In German class, I stared at girls a lot.    I didn't find that subject all that much fun, even though I got B's and A's in it.

And hey, it has been a quarter-of-a-century !!

I do remember "kartoffelsalat"... potato salad.   Or, perhaps in honor of your Ron White fan-dom, I should be sayin.... "Tater Salad!"
