Are you a Mizzou sports fan?

I'm writing a book entitled FOR MIZZOU FANS ONLY and I am looking for some interesting stories, sidebars and personal tales about life as a Tigers fan....it can be about any sport, from any era. I've talked to a kid who mowed Norm Stewart's grass and a guy who brought a Mizzou toilet to Football Fan Appreciation Day to have it signed by all the players (they were laughing their heads off)...Were you there for the fifth-down game? Are you a former player or coach? Please give me a call at 350-6333 or send an e-mail to bill.althaus@examiner.net ... I'd love to hear from you. And thanks to all the fans who contacted me for my last project, FOR CHIEFS FANS ONLY... I always appreciate Examiner readers and bloggers...

A recent memorable moment for me was my daughters were students at MU and I think it was around 2004, MU vs Nebraska at Farout, a night game televised on national TV. MU hadn't won at home against the huskers for ever Smith QB'ed a very memorable victory and the goal posts came down and the town went wild. There's nothing like the adrenaline that goes with Division I sports and rivalries!! Now, a less memorable event was when I was a student around 1972 and we played Nebraska at home, Onofrio was coach, and the offensive strategy was to quick punt on 3rd down to kick the punt over the heads of the defensive backs so they were deeper in their own territory and had to drive 70-80 yards before they scored. That will empty the stands in the 1st half and send you to Booches for a burger and trash talk!!!

The quick kick on 3rd down was used by OK with great effectiveness.  They would quick kick for 60 yards, the other team would do a 3 play and out,  OK would get the ball after a forty yard punt and they would have gained 20 yards without the offense touching the ball.  Worked good in the days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust if you had a great defense.

No great stories, I did live in the same apartment building with Al Eberhard in the 70s.  He was this big raw boned Iowa workhorse that managed to play a while in the NBA.  Always friendly to everyone.
I also lived in the same dorm as one of the shot putters.  I read later he was training for the olympics in LA and working as a bouncer.  He was shot in the stomach but he was so strong the bullet didn't penetrate so he was not hurt bad.  No surprise he was a giant of a man.
Favorite sports moment was beating  #1 Alabama and Bear Bryant on national TV in I believe 1975.  Bryant always ducked Big 8 schools after that.

.........(crickets chirping)..........well Bill.........it  LOOKS like Mizzou and Les Paul are OUT with Examiner bloggers.......if  we were in Kansas?..........I HAVE to believe the Jayhawks would be fighting with the Wildcats.........ROFL..............and so it is........c'mon dshrout...........Bill needs you..........

Hey I was there in 1966, the team sucked we lost most of the games, tickets were hard to get?
My buddy and I played frat Football for Delta Tau Delta, It was almost a bigger deal,
Frat Football, lots of Bear, and girls and football??? then a Trip to Vietnam?

Devine had 5 seasons in the 60's of 8 wins or more. He was a heck of a coach and an outstanding decade for MU football. I guess you'd had to have been a QB in Greek town with your honey cheering you on for that to be a bigger deal.
